COA vs SDS vs TDS for Cosmetic Raw Materials
Use the right document for the decision: batch acceptance, handling hazards and formulation guidance require different evidence.
Match the document to the task
A COA records stated analytical results for an identified lot against its specification. An SDS communicates hazard, handling and emergency information for the described material. A TDS provides grade-specific technical and application guidance. A catalog PDF can help create a shortlist, but it does not replace these controlled supplier documents.
Check identity and revision consistency
Match product name, grade code, manufacturer where supplied, composition and document revision. Check that the COA lot matches the offered or delivered batch, and that methods, units and reporting basis match your acceptance criteria. A pass statement without the underlying test definition may require clarification. Check SDS applicability to the exact preparation, especially when carriers or preservatives are present.
Record the approval and open questions
Create a document register with owner, received date, version and approval status. Ask the supplier to resolve inconsistent identity, unclear assay basis or missing methods before the decision. Keep the approved specification, actual lot COA and sample trial records together. Regulatory suitability remains specific to the material, intended use and destination market.
Compare the approaches
| Approach | What to check |
|---|---|
| Catalog product guide | Summarizes identity, reference specifications and sourcing questions for evaluation. |
| Lot-specific COA | Identifies a lot and reports its stated analytical results against the applicable specification. |
Neither a catalog PDF nor an SDS alone proves finished-product safety or efficacy.
Apply the distinction to a sample brief
For a botanical, ask which marker an assay measures. For a peptide preparation, ask whether concentration is mass-based. For a gum, ask for viscosity test conditions. The document review should follow the technical risk of the actual material rather than rely on one generic checklist.
Relevant ingredient specifications
Use these grade pages to define the documents and sample checks for the materials in your brief. They are examples for evaluation, not a ready-made formula.
Next steps and supporting guides
Agree the test and acceptance criteria before ordering a sample. Request the current specification, lot COA, SDS and TDS for the offered grade.
