Cosmetic Raw Material Sample Evaluation and Quotation
Compare samples and quotations on the same grade, composition and acceptance criteria before deciding which offer has the lower usable cost.
Send a comparable sample brief
Specify the intended formula format, destination market, grade identity, supplied composition and trial quantity. Include acceptance criteria and the documents needed for review. Ask suppliers to state whether the sample represents the proposed commercial grade, and whether the commercial lot is already identified. Agree what happens if the commercial material differs from the approved sample.
Compare usable material and supply terms
Normalize price to a comparable composition and documented active basis where appropriate; do not treat HPLC area purity as a mass correction by default. Review packaging, order minimum, availability, lead time, delivery basis and any testing cost for the actual offer. A quoted price without these assumptions is an incomplete comparison.
Approve evidence and retain a reference
Review identity and batch documents, then run the planned formulation trials against a control. Keep the approved sample, document revisions, results and decision owner. Confirm commercial specifications and change-notification expectations before ordering. A supplier comparison should include technical fit and execution risk as well as the material price.
Compare the approaches
| Approach | What to check |
|---|---|
| Price-per-kilogram comparison | Quick to collect but can hide carrier, active-basis and delivery differences. |
| Comparable-grade evaluation | Matches composition, acceptance tests, supply terms and trial performance. |
A lower price is meaningful only after the offered materials and costs are comparable.
Apply the distinction to a sample brief
A peptide solution and powder require different concentration information. Two botanical offers may report different marker groups. Two emulsifier grades may share part of an INCI list yet require separate trials. Use a documented comparison table to keep these differences visible before approving a source.
Relevant ingredient specifications
Use these grade pages to define the documents and sample checks for the materials in your brief. They are examples for evaluation, not a ready-made formula.
