Cosmetic Emulsion and Viscosity Troubleshooting
When an emulsion separates or viscosity drifts, isolate the emulsifier, hydration and process variables before increasing the thickener.
Record the failure and the control
Describe when the change appears: during manufacture, after cooling or during storage. Record formula version, raw-material lots, mixing equipment, order of addition and measurement conditions. Compare against a retained control prepared by the same method. A viscosity value without instrument, temperature and measurement conditions is difficult to interpret.
Separate interface problems from rheology problems
Check whether the emulsifier system fits the complete oil phase and process. Confirm the exact composition of self-emulsifying grades and olivate blends. Separately review gum wetting, hydration time and interactions with electrolytes and other ingredients. An incompletely hydrated thickener can look different after standing; adding more gum does not establish that the oil-water interface is stable.
Change one variable and repeat
Select a single documented change, such as hydration sequence or mixing conditions, and prepare a controlled trial. Record appearance, separation and rheology over a defined protocol appropriate to the product. Evaluate preservation and packaging compatibility in the final system. Accelerated screening can help compare trials, but does not alone establish the marketed shelf life.
Compare the approaches
| Approach | What to check |
|---|---|
| Emulsifier adjustment | Targets the oil-water interface and requires review of oil phase and processing. |
| Rheology adjustment | Targets flow and structure and requires consistent hydration and measurement. |
A thicker sample is not automatically a more stable emulsion.
Apply the distinction to a sample brief
If comparing Glyceryl Stearate SE with an olivate system, obtain the exact grade composition and processing guidance for each. If evaluating clear xanthan gum, compare clarity and viscosity under the same test conditions rather than treating the word clear as a guarantee for every formula.
Relevant ingredient specifications
Use these grade pages to define the documents and sample checks for the materials in your brief. They are examples for evaluation, not a ready-made formula.
Next steps and supporting guides
Agree the test and acceptance criteria before ordering a sample. Request the current specification, lot COA, SDS and TDS for the offered grade.
