Cosmetic Ingredient Solubility and Dispersion Testing

Screen dissolution, dispersion and hydration separately so a promising-looking sample does not hide sediment, incomplete hydration or an unsuitable vehicle.

Specify the screening conditions

Start with the supplier TDS and intended formulation vehicle. Record concentration on an explicit basis, temperature, pH where relevant, mixing method and elapsed time. Use suitable safe handling from the SDS. Test the actual grade: a carrier-containing preparation can behave differently from an isolated compound with a similar name.

Observe the right outcome

Distinguish a true solution from a dispersed solid, emulsion or hydrated polymer. Record initial appearance and changes after standing, such as sediment, haze, agglomerates or viscosity development. Where visual inspection is insufficient, agree an analytical or physical test with the laboratory. A clear-looking sample alone does not quantify dissolved active.

Confirm compatibility in the finished system

Repeat the selected route in the full formula, including the intended electrolyte, preservative and oil systems. Check the same properties under an appropriate stability protocol. Maintain a control and record any change in supplier, carrier or process. Do not generalize a solubility claim from one solvent, temperature or test concentration to all cosmetic applications.

Compare the approaches

Dissolution screen vs Dispersion or hydration screen
ApproachWhat to check
Dissolution screenAsks whether the ingredient forms a solution under specified conditions.
Dispersion or hydration screenAsks about distribution, wetting, settling or polymer hydration over time.

Neither screen replaces complete formulation stability or microbiological evaluation.

Apply the distinction to a sample brief

Use separate observation plans for niacinamide dissolution, hyaluronic acid hydration and xanthan gum development. For glabridin preparations, confirm the full composition and proposed dispersion system first. Select the test conditions from the current grade documents rather than from a generic ingredient description.

Relevant ingredient specifications

Use these grade pages to define the documents and sample checks for the materials in your brief. They are examples for evaluation, not a ready-made formula.

Next steps and supporting guides

Agree the test and acceptance criteria before ordering a sample. Request the current specification, lot COA, SDS and TDS for the offered grade.
